Letters from the Desert

A compendium of your responses to us concerning the silencing of

A Voice in the Desert

Father in the Desert

When Archbishop Flynn requested on Ash Wednesday, March 1, 2006, that Father Robert Altier cease publishing his homilies on the Internet and participating in broadcasts on Relevant Radio, we began receiving a large volume of emails from around the world written by fervent Catholics who expressed their concern and great disappointment that Father Altier's homilies and spiritual presentations would no longer be available on the website A Voice in the Desert. This poignant testimony of the faithful in witness to the immense good which God accomplished through Father Altier's ministry is powerfully illustrated in the numerous excerpts featured throughout the following pages.

Web statistics show that visitors come to  www.desertvoice.org from 83 different countries worldwide. The total number of visitors in March was 39,682 with an average of 1,280 visitors per day. The highest amount of visits on a single day was 8,174. It is our prayer that Catholics will once again have access to the inspiring words of Father Altier

And now, here are your words:

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory Forever!

I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and my family, along with several Parish Priests, read his homilies daily. We have learned a lot over the years as his homilies are excellent and not the usual "fluff" we hear at our own parish... Fr. Altier's homilies and example of life are edifying and have probably kept my family and I Catholic when we were on the verge of leaving the faith over all the scandals. He has been feeding the sheep who have been starving to death for lack of good priests and homilies!!!  -- L.O. ~ Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Fr. Altier's homilies and love of the Eucharist have been a beacon of hope for many in Western Europe.

Dear Friends.......Greetings from New Zealand. How sad I am re the close down of Fr. Altier's Homilies. I can say without any doubt your web site has been a very large inspiration in my growth back to the RC Church. Please convey my best wishes to Fr. Altier and know that your outreach was not in vain. God bless, -- M.M. ~ Auckland, New Zealand

What in the world happened????? I think Fr. Altier's homilies are excellent and I often get good material and inspiration for my own homilies. What could possibly be the objection? -- Fr. M. G. ~ California, USA

ﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩ

I don't live in USA, so I can't go to mass to hear Father Robert. The only way to know about his homilies was with this page. I only want to thank those who made this possible in the past, because the way he explains us the Bible and how to follow Jesus, is just incredible. I don't have a spiritual director, but I surely can say that I found a lot of answers in their homilies. Thank you very much, and God bless you. -- R. ~ Argentina

Since, I was on the brink of becoming an "Atheist" or much worse that is losing completely any faith that I had in God or in the Catholic Church; I decided to visit this web site in 2002 ...I slowly started to notice something. This is what I observed. I observed that every time I read one of Father Altier's Homilies this acid or hate within me against the Catholic Church was dissipating and making me a better person. Slowly, I realized that I had regained my love for the Catholic Church solely because of Father Altier's Homilies on the Sacraments and the Spiritual Life. .. No one could have done this for me except Father Altier and his Awesome and Soul Stirring Homilies which I have found to be not only educational with regard to the Catholic Faith but Father Altier has also delivered me from Satan's Grasp and made me love God once more. Father Altier has also done more than that. He has made me passionately love Jesus Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament as well as Our Lady - Mother of all Mankind and given me immense hope in my Spiritual Walk with Almighty God. .. This is all due to the Homilies of Father Altier. .. he has not only touched the hearts and souls of countless Catholics in all of the 50 States of the United States but  has touched the lives of Catholics in countries like Canada, India, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and in numerous countries in Europe, South Asia, South East Asia as well as in the Continent of Africa wherever Catholics can access the Internet and read his Homilies.

... Fr Altier's sermon's helped us tremendously to live our faith - what a sad day that he is no longer allowed to get his wonderful thought provoking homilies published - Lord, have mercy on us all and may He protect Fr Altier - thank you for creating the web-site - it was great while it lasted.-- M.F. ~ England

Thank you so much for all the work you have done to bring Father Altier's homilies to so many others. I live in Canada and my husband and I have been faithful listeners to Fathers sermons for quite some time thanks to your website. We are so saddened to see this situation arise, our thoughts and prayers are with Father Altier and so many others. Hopefully this situation will one day be resolved and we will once again be inspired by Father's truthful words.
Thank you once again.-- D.D. ~ Ontario, Canada

I am writing from London, United Kingdom. I used to greatly enjoy reading Fr. Altier's homilies and was saddened to hear that he is now unable to publish his EXCELLENT sermons and counsels. ... He is inspirational, challenging, uplifting and HOLY. (and we all know how rare these qualities are nowadays).-- A.C. ~ England, UK

ﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩ

We should all be rejoicing for being blessed with such a faithful priest! Fr. Altier's website has won the fidelity award from Catholic Culture, as recent as February 2006 and to disallow his homilies from his site, is a grave injustice to all of the faithful.

...I will never be able to visit St. Agnes's church where Fr. Altier continues to actively minister - he is far removed from me and my colleagues who were enriched with his gift of preaching. I am not bitter, I am bitterly disappointed and I thought that the use of the media to bring people to Christ was one of our late Pope John Paul's wishes. Use every means to draw people to Christ and this Priest was very good at that. I'm sure people will get to his parish and he will continue to minister effectively there - but as I said - he is a grave loss to many here in Ireland and I'm sure throughout the world.

I was shocked and saddened when I saw that your website Desert Voice was shut down. I came across this website a couple of years ago and, as a result of reading Father Altier's homilies, my understanding of the Catholic faith and scripture has grown. Father Altier, by his talks [audio] and homilies [text], has challenged me and stretched me to go 'beyond my comfort zone'. He tells it like it is because he speaks the Truth "and the Truth will set us free". What he speaks is "right on"!!!!! He is truly a gift to the Church!!  I received a copy of his earlier homilies [not on the website] from a very kind parishioner/supporter and each day I read and reflect on the message....what he speaks about more people need to hear. We all need to change but more importantly, need to go into deeper prayer... I was excited when I saw the recent audio talks added and have been able to hear some of them. I was planning at the start of Lent to make "my Lenten Mission" the hearing the talks and praying of the "Stations of the Cross" and the several others talks on Lent that Father Altier had. ...In closing, I want to say that this website has been a gift to me. Over the past several years, I have directed priests as well as lay people to make it [the homilies] a part of their daily prayer and meditation. I pray that in the near future Father Altier [and your family] will be able to resume this wonderful website............ Make God bless you and yours with His choicest blessings. ﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩﻩ

Now, I have something to really offer up, the silence and suffering of two people (me and my son) to that of Father Altier and all the other holy priests ... I am sitting here looking at the picture of the priest holding up the Host in which Jesus truly IS [on the DesertVoice home page]. It is majestic and breath-taking and I am drawing strength from that one picture that says it all. ... Obedience. Conform the human will to that of the Divine no matter the consequences. Thank you. God and Mary bless all of you. Think about the Passion of Jesus! -- C. and B.

For about a year now my wife and I have been reading your daily homilies and they have helped both of us grow stronger in our faith and closer to our Lord. .. After we started reading the daily readings and your homilies each day we started to experience changes in our lives. Our marriage and family started to heal and our faith grew stronger...This morning I was again looking forward to reading your homily for today's readings and then sharing them with my wife... I am sure she'll be extremely disappointed also and confused as to why they are no longer available. I live in England and I read on your - now closed - website, about the trouble Fr. Altier is having. Please assure Fr. Altier that I shall think of him and remember him in my prayers, especially the Rosary. Our Lady said (more or less) 'you can have anything (good) that you want, if you pray my Rosary.' I know this to be true, so my daily prayer will be that Fr. Altier will continue to have the strength and wisdom that he needs in his trials.--- M.T. ~ England, UK

It was only in December of 2005 that I discovered your website and I always look forward to it when ever I come home from work. Everything happens for a reason and I AM SURE THAT GOD has seen the good that will come out of this crisis. Father Altier homilies is what the world needs today as unfortunately the loss of the sense of sin is prevalent in the world today. I do hope that the website will return with much greater eagerness to convert souls to CHRIST JESUS .Please pray for me as I shall be getting married on Easter Monday in Nigeria-the homilies have really helped me prepare spiritually for the up coming event. I shall pray for you too. May GOD bless you always in the name of JESUS CHRIST: AMEN!! -- D. ~ Nigeria

I grieve for the loss of A Voice in the Desert. It is truly a desert out here, and it was my consolation to come here often, to hear the truth. I feel the darkness enveloping us, and the voices of the true shepherds becoming dimmer.

...let him know that there are families who struggle in the desert too. We homeschool our 8 children and no matter what happens to the ability to homeschool--we will never send our children to public school, even if that public school calls themselves Catholic. We must protect the future of the Church! We are raising holy holy holy saints, not just good Catholics.  I am a devout Catholic from Ireland and was a regular visitor to Desert Voice. I was deeply surprised at finding the website had been taken off the web. Please know that my husband and I think you are truly a Catholic priest (unfortunately this cannot be said about a lot of priests, very sad) who wishes to teach the Catholic faith as it should be taught, in your homilies. We have been reading your homilies for a long time and they have brought both of us much closer to Jesus. ..Please keep preaching your homilies from the pulpit for those who come to mass, at least they will be able to be continue to be inspired by them. As for the rest of us who were only able to read or listen to them, I know Jesus will take care of this very sad situation for out of darkness he is always able to bring a greater good. The journey I am taking, through Lenten desert, has just gotten lonelier. My daily time with you via your homilies has been helping me redirect my life. I have simplified my life by coming to know the quiet that is required to know God. Your reflections have been the one piece of media that I have reduced myself to each day. Even Catholic radio can be addictive and too wasteful of my time. I will pray for you and check back from time to time. Thank you for allowing the Holy Spirit to use you in loving others. My wife and I came back to the faith after over twenty years in evangelical Protestantism. Needless to say there was (and there still is) much to learn about the Catholic church and her rich tradition and practices. I wanted to write you a note of encouragement at this time simply to let you know what a tremendous source of blessing it has been for my wife and I to hear you as a guest on relevant radio 820 am in the Chicago area. Your voice is also familiar to our children as we listen together and has been a springboard for some very good discussion. Your ability to tackle complex issues and provide concise answers which are simple enough to understand without diluting the truth is a unique gift. We (as will so many others as well) will miss your voice and pray that it will only be for a short time until we can again enjoy listening to you. ... Be assured that many (including us!) will be praying for you and the whole situation.

Once again, thank you so much for your service till now, I truly hope that you will be allowed to resume it soon (I designed my Lent spiritual exercises around your web site). ...Living in Western Wisconsin, I do not have the luxury of spiritual instruction being so readily available and have become dependent on desertvoice.org and Relevant Radio for spiritual stimulation and education. I have found Fr. Altier to be obedient to the Holy Father and to [the archbishop] and on many occasions, praise [his] spirituality and work. Fr. Altier has become an amazing draw for those who seek out Christ. I personally know fourteen people in four different families who are now Catholic specifically because of Fr. Altier's efforts and I'm sure there are countless others. This is amazing to me. My oldest son has expressed an interest in the priesthood and two of my daughters in the religious life. This would not happen if they did not have the example of people like Fr. Altier. -- M.H. ~ Wisconsin, USA

Each day I come home from Mass and read your beautiful homilies. They are such nourishment for my soul, and I have told so many others who also faithfully seek Christ each day through your beautiful words. Again, Father, you will remain in my prayers each day and in all of my holy hours before the Blessed Sacrament.

...my friend told me about A Voice in the Desert. I started reading those homilies. I could hardly believe that anyone could preach so concisely and clearly. The messages were so simple and so profound at the same time. A sweetness and absolute love for Jesus filled every one of them. Could this possibly be a Catholic preaching? (Forgive me, Father: we Protestants are taught many untruths about your beliefs and Church.) I was impressed by the boldness and courage with which Father addressed the issues. There was none of our denominational waffling here. It was obvious that Father was a wise and intelligent man, and yet he believed in the saints and preached on texts from books I'd never heard of! And I was learning things! The Scriptures were coming alive and sometimes making sense to me for the first time ever! ...I realize that I am well on my way to becoming a Catholic. My friend has given me your Fundamentals of Catholicism. What a wonderful set of videos! I hope you realize how much I appreciated your internet ministries. I am so very sorry that they have been silenced. I am praying that they may soon be restored. In the meantime, I pray that none of you loose heart, but take fresh courage daily in the Lord. ..My grandchildren's sanctity and innocents are always at the top of my list of concerns, and really felt supported and relieved to discover Fr Altier was on the same page as I was. I could really go on and on about how much I love my Catholic faith, thanks to so so many for which I owe this gift. Truth isn't something easily explained but once experienced it can never be erased. I think that's it. If Fr Altier didn't preach the truth, I'd have no need or desire to hear him... I'm a happier and grateful man for having heard Fr Altier speak and hope the train soon get back on track. Thanks. -- N.D.

...I had my entire Lent planned out based on that website. His talks such as "how to prepare for Lent," "the seven last words of Christ", etc. were going to be my Sunday assignment for Lent. Every Sunday I listen to Fr. Altier's homilies, which challenge me and help me so very much. I was devastated to hear the news of his silencing. I desperately need his zeal for the Faith to keep my faith going and I know there are many others like me.

Aloha: I have been a great admirer of Fr. Altier ever since picking up his little Examination of Conscience book. I was shocked to find out what has happened to him in your archdiocese. Please tell Fr. Altier that I am praying for him and that I have written the Archdiocese asking the Archbishop to reconsider. Yesterday when I logged onto your website I was greatly disturbed by your announcement that you will not be publishing any longer on the web. I'm a 68 year old retired restaurant owner. Retired just one year now. I found your website about nine months ago and have only missed a few days during that time. You have become a regular part of my morning. I listen and then read the transcript or if both are ready before I go to noon mass, I like to read along while I listen. You have been a great inspiration to me even though on occasion you seem to come across pretty strong. I've never listened to you that I did not take something away. .. Respectfully, -- D.W. ~ Michigan, USA

Thank you for being the reasoned, articulate and charitable voice of a priestly father to these listeners of Relevant Radio. You were among the chief reasons for our family tuning in to 1050 a.m. in the Green Bay Diocese. The words of the apostle come to mind now: "Lord to whom should we go?" May Our Lord bless you and Mary keep you.

Father Altier is one of the very few true leaders in the Catholic Church and commands a following like no other priest in this diocese. .. Through his fundamentals of Catholicism class, he brings many of the lost sheep home, as they hear his voice, and recognize it. How are they to answer the call if they are not allowed to hear it? He is truly an extension of the voice that was heard in the desert thousands of years ago, a...the Catholic Church should have many more like him, he is a walking Saint. -- T.S. ~ Minnesota, USA

Your homilies have been a daily meditation for me, a spiritual direction in a way that has been priceless. Through your insights, my Catholic faith has deepened greatly and my love for God has grown tremendously over the past three years. As a member of a distant diocese and with little to no priestly spiritual direction available today, I will suffer as a result of this decision. I join my prayers and fasting with yours in desiring God's will for all involved and concerned with this. May you especially experience His love as you endure these persecutions. Know that your "extended" flock supports you and loves you. We praise God for your presence in our lives and thank Him for allowing you to touch our hearts. We place our trust in Him...God Bless You, -- V.L. ~ Wisconsin, USA

I am saddened and shocked that the words of God as spoken by Fr. Altier are no longer available ...What a loss for all of us. It is easy to find evil on the internet, but how difficult it is to find holiness. For years, Father Altier has spoken directly to my heart and has helped me and my family grow in our faith. As a mother of four children, I have used his homilies and instructions to help guide us. I have often copied parts of his homilies to send to our children in college... Sincerely, -- P.G.

..What I am concerned about is the lack of access to good quality material that I can benefit from spiritually during this Lent and the whole year. I trust the information I receive from Fr. Altier specifically because I have found him to be obedient to the Holy Father and to Bishop Flynn. Therefore I believe that he will be faithful to the teachings of the church... I don't care to speculate as to why the Bishop made this decision, I only know that it has had a negative impact on my family's ability to grow in spirituality and I ask him to reconsider. Sincerely -- M.H.

Where can we find this kind of substance for our souls...I have never found such substance in Catholic Homilies and teachings and have referred many, if not all whom i come in contact with to view this website to find the nourishment and TRUTH of GOD'S LOVE for them as well as a place that makes distinctions and specifies spiritual guidance for them to find their way home to heaven....such insight and depth and beauty in these teachings plus the Priest that imparts this way of life lives the message he relays....please I ask that the flock of this shepherd be allowed to hear the Voice in the Desert... I tell you that I am grieved by this decision...it is the deprivation of a visible evidence that Catholicism implemented leads to Eternal Life with God. -- W.

...Fr. Altier's masterful teaching has led me to a better understanding of my Catholic faith. Two of my children were baptized by Fr. Altier and my marriage was officiated by him. I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I was when I sat down at my computer tonight looking forward to reading one of Fr. Altier's sermons. I try to read his sermons daily since they are so inspiring and full of the truth that so many Catholics yearn to hear these days. I also have forwarded many of his sermons to Protestant friends of mine in the hopes that the myths about Catholicism that they believe can be dispelled. The shutting down of this website is a huge loss to Catholics and Protestants alike who are looking for unity. I will say a prayer that this matter will be resolved with the Archbishop. I pray that the Archbishop will have a change of heart and that this wonderful ministry that your family created can once again be fruitful. Ave Maria! When I wished to have a holy teaching and mediation on the day's readings, I would go to Fr. Altier. For decades we have had no true teaching from the pulpit. ..It has been so very helpful to get a good solid Catholic homily every day from Fr. Altier. I have recently taken to printing them out daily for my 15-year-old to read to the family. His homilies have truly been spiritual drink in this desert, and there is no other priest I know who gives such beneficial and loving words of wisdom. About a year ago I also passed on a link to my friend. At the time, she had been a fallen away Catholic for a good many years. Today, she goes to daily Mass, reads Fr. Altier's homilies every day, and prints out the ones that help her most to give to her friends...
